After more than 70 empty years, largest hotel made by Hitler might get a facelift

It has not had a single guest ever since it was built 76 years ago but that might change soon enough as some groups are interested in renovating it.

Located in the island of Rugen in the Baltic sea, Hotel Prora, built by the controversial and historical political personality Adolf Hitler, has never had any visitors since it was built even though it is said to be the world’s largest hotel housing 10,000 rooms. The whole establishment runs for three miles. It is so huge that you would need over an hour to walk from one end to another. There is no way to photograph its enormous structure except through an aerial shot.

The hotel has a school, a theater, and a hospital inside. It also includes a jetty that connects the visitors to the sea. Each room has a view of the sea.

The whole aim of the hotel was to accommodate 25,000 Nazis or workers along with their families during the holidays. It was part of Hitler’s Strength Through Joy program. It was a place for the Nazis and their families for leisure.

The hotel was never entirely finished because construction was sidetracked due to the war. When the Rugen Island fell during World War II to the hands of the Soviets, plans of blowing up the hotel were proposed. However, they did not have enough explosives to completely destroy it. They turned it into a military base instead.

Today, it is deteriorating but someone might give it a facelift soon.

“These are not harmless buildings. The original purpose for Hitler was construction of a resort in preparation for the war to come. This way of dealing with the building trivialises it and affirms the Nazi regime,” Jurgen Rostock, co-founder for the Prora documentation center, noted about plans to revamp the hotel.

Despite the controversy, according to Daily Mail, the hotel is in the process of being sold off and renovated. Some of the rooms could possibly be marketed as homes for the elderly while some could be sold as luxury apartments.
